How I work for you

Doula

Defininition:

"Doula is used to describe a trained and experienced labor companion who provides the woman and her husband or partner continuous emotional support, physical comfort, and assistance in obtaining information before, during, and just after childbirth." - EvidenceBasedBirth.com/Doulas

One of the Doula's primary goals is to care for emotional health and enhance the ability to positively recall the birthing experience. We accomplish this by:

  • Maintaining continuous presence
  • Keeping company
  • Reassurance
  • Encouragement
  • Praise
  • Affirming
  • Mirroring
  • Accepting and supporting birthing person's decisions
  • Helping birthing person overcome fear and self doubt
  • Debriefing after birth

Physical support is important because it helps you, the birthing person maintain a sense of control, comfort, and confidence. Physical support includes but is not limited to:

  • Massage
  • Counter pressure
  • Hand holding
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Movement
  • Walking to/from washroom
  • Adjusting positioning (especially important when epidural is in place)
  • Applying compress
  • Offering food/drink/ice

Informative support will help keep everyone informed about what is going on, what to expect, and provides access to evidence-based information about birth options that might otherwise not be sought out or available. I provide continuous access to information and open communication from the point of first contact all the way through my journey together with you, the client.

Advocacy in a supporting role means that I will amplify your voice in times of dismissal, inattention, or disregard. I will create space and time needed for you to make concious informed decisions. I will keep your wishes and needs at the forefront of my attention. I will call to attention anticipated "next steps" to help you make informed decisions and maintain a sense of control and presence. I've got your back!

What sets us apart

"Childbirth is an experience in a woman's life that holds the power to transform her forever. Passing through these powerful gates - in her own way - remembering all the generations of women who walk with her... She is never alone" - Suzanne Arms
